Visit of Students from the University in Washington, Seattle, in August 2023
A team of 15 students from the university of Washington, Seattle, USA stopped at Anisha for an exposure visit. On their month-long visit to India for interdisciplinary studies they had anchored in Bangalore and visited many people, places of interest and organisations that gave them insights in socio-economic and cultural dimensions of Indian society. The multi-cultural team was headed by Dr. Anu Taranath, professor at the University of Washington for 29 years and author of “Beyond Guilt Trips”. The camp was facilitated by two champions in the field of Women’s Rights in Karnataka- Ms. Usha and Ms. Indu. They both are well known in the circles of art and literature. The camping students were introduced to a number of local issues that build the background of the work and history of Anisha. The shaping of the landscape of peninsular India, the demographic account of the district, the socio-cultural inheritance of the communities that live here were topics touched on. Mr. Manu and Mr. Bosco shared their experiences of working in this countryside and communities for over a decade. As part of a cultural treat, a folk song performance was arranged. Mr. Kailash Murthy accompanied by five percussionists took the listeners by storm. These Neelagaras, through their lively songs narrated the story of Manteswamy, Biligiri Ranganatha and Shivasharane Sankavva. The whole day went on in the mode of a workshop rather than a concert. There were lively discussions. There was a small trek and a hands-on activity upon kitchen gardening. Soil preparation for container gardening was demonstrated and the participants filled in grow bags with seeds and their names on them.

Nature fulfills our needs not our greeds”
- M.K.Gandhi From April 22st to 28th, a nature camp took place as planned. 6 girls and 17 boys between 10-18 years participated. They came from different parts of Karnataka and different socio-economic backtrounds, from urban and rural areas, with and without experience in rural life. The 8 days of the residential Camp were split between the premises of Amrit Bhoomi Trust and at Anisha's Resource Center. They slept in the newly renovated dormitories and were provided with healthy meals, vegetarian and non-vegetarian. Activities were carefully designed by the experienced organisers to fit this specific group. They consisted of theories on evolution, sustainable livelihoods, low cost housing, self defense and a practical part, where bricks were manufactured and seeds for green manure sown, an elementary exercise for any organic farmer. Several wildlife sanctuaries were visited and nature hot spots within day-excursion range of Anisha. Mysore Amateur Naturalists, headed by Manu, has been holding nature camps for several years now: Amrit Bhoomi is an International Farmer’s Center run by Chukki Nanjundaswamy (daughter of Prof. Nanjundaswamy one of the founders of Karnataka Rajya Raitha Sangha.) The organisers were supported by well-experienced resource persons from the participating organisations. All participants of the Camp, the youth, the trainers and the parents found the time together an extraordinary experience of learning and sharing and having fun together. Anisha, May 2019 |
